What to Do When Your Shopify Geolocation App Stops Working

If your geolocation app suddenly stopped working, you’re not alone. We’ve been hearing from Shopify store owners whose storefront rules, redirects, or visibility settings have vanished without warning, usually tied to apps they’ve relied on for years.

This disruption isn’t random. As of April 8, 2025, Shopify rolled out another scheduled API version change. Apps that weren’t updated in time may now be incompatible or even removed from the App Store entirely. If your app hasn’t been maintained, or the developer has gone quiet, chances are it no longer meets Shopify’s minimum requirements.

Unfortunately, once an app is delisted or out of sync with the latest API, it often stops functioning altogether, even if it’s still installed in your store.

Why It’s Happening

Shopify follows a regular API versioning schedule, updating their platform every few months to introduce new features, improve performance, and close security gaps. While this is great for long-term growth and stability, it also means apps need to stay current or risk being left behind.

When an app doesn’t update to match Shopify’s latest API requirements, it gradually loses compatibility. If it’s not fixed in time, it can be removed from the App Store, stop working altogether, or create unexpected errors in your store.

Unfortunately, not every app developer stays on top of these changes. Some companies wind down support, while others may no longer have the resources to keep up. We’ve seen this play out before, and it’s always store owners who feel the impact the most.

How to Know If Your App Was Removed

Not sure if your app was affected? Here are a few signs:

  • It’s no longer listed on the Shopify App Store
  • You haven’t seen any updates or release notes from the developer in over a year
  • Support isn’t responding, or the website for the app is offline
  • Features have quietly stopped working, and your storefront behaviour has changed

If any of this sounds familiar, your app may have been deprecated  or is no longer functioning due to the April 2025 API update. But don’t panic , there are ways to recover or replace the missing functionality.

Quick Troubleshooting Steps

Before assuming the worst, there are a few things you can check to rule out simple issues:

  • Check the app settings and permissions
Sometimes, changes to Shopify’s API or your store’s theme can affect how an app behaves. Head into the app’s settings and make sure everything is still configured as expected, including location rules, visibility conditions, and storefront permissions.
  • Review your Shopify logs
In your Shopify admin, navigate to Settings > Notifications > Activity Log (or use the browser console) to see if any recent errors are being flagged. You may spot failed API calls or permission errors linked to the app.
  • Try disabling and re-enabling the app
Occasionally, refreshing the app’s connection can resolve small glitches, especially if the issue started recently. If you do this, make sure to re-test your geolocation rules afterward.
  • Look into native Shopify geolocation settings
Shopify has slowly added more built-in geolocation and market targeting features over time. While they may not fully replace your app’s functionality, they can serve as a temporary stopgap in some cases.

If none of these steps resolve the issue or if the app is completely unresponsive, it’s likely that it’s no longer supported or hasn’t been updated for the latest API requirements. In that case, you’ll want to start considering alternative solutions.

What You Can Do Next

If your geolocation app is no longer functioning and support has gone silent, you still have a few paths forward:

  • Reach out to a Shopify developer
In some cases, a developer can create a custom workaround or patch to keep critical functionality running, at least temporarily. This can be especially useful if you rely heavily on location-based content or rules that aren’t easily replaced.
  • Switch to an actively supported tool
Depending on which features you were using, there may be newer apps in the Shopify App Store that offer similar functionality and ongoing support. Migrating to one of these tools early can help prevent further disruptions.

Our team has worked with several merchants facing exactly this situation. We’ve helped restore essential functionality after abandoned plugins broke due to platform updates — and in some cases, we’ve built short-term fixes while a longer-term solution is being developed.

If your geolocation app has stopped working and you're stuck without a clear path forward, reach out to us. Even if your original plugin is no longer supported, we may be able to help stabilize your store and restore key functionality while you explore longer-term options.
